TORONTO - Thousands of Canadians have signed a petition asking the U. S. Food and Drug Administration to change its guidelines on the use of drugs containing sildenafil citrate to enhance sexual performance in men who have been prescribed it.
The Canadian Drug Safety Association says it is "fatal to patients who use drugs to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) or premature ejaculation".
The warning label on Viagra warns of the risk of an adverse effect on the heart, heart, blood vessels in the penis and blood vessels in the lungs.
The drug was first approved in 1998 and has been on the market since 2003.
Viagra has been sold in Canada since June 2007.
The Canadian drug regulator last month warned that men who take the erectile dysfunction drug may have an increased risk of pulmonary embolus, which can be life-threatening if not treated immediately.
The warning applies to men who take the erectile dysfunction drug at least one hour before sex.
"If you have suffered a heart attack, stroke, stroke or other heart disease before taking sildenafil citrate, you may have an increased risk of sudden cardiac death, stroke and life-threatening blood clots."
The drug is not listed on the FDA's label because it contains the active ingredient in Viagra.
The FDA has said it is aware of the warning label in light of this.
"While it is not a life-threatening drug, it is extremely important for patients to be aware of the potential risks and to seek appropriate medical care if they have any concerns," the agency said.
The warning also applies to men who have been prescribed the drug for the following conditions:
• Peptic ulcer disease or another type of ulcer in the stomach or intestines that can cause stomach pain;
• Myocardial infarction or coronary artery disease or heart disease, stroke, or other heart conditions;
• Stroke in which blood is trapped in the arteries leading to the heart;

• History of an eye condition that may affect the vision;
• History of a severe allergic reaction or hypersensitivity reaction to sildenafil, tadalafil, or any other component of the drug;
• History of any other conditions that may be linked to the drug;
• History of a blood disorder or an eye disorder;
• History of any other medical condition or disease that can cause or be caused by sildenafil;
• History of stroke;
